Program Overview

Boys Tennis Program

Tennis has been part of the Gunn athletic program since 1925, giving generations of students the chance to compete against opponents from other top prep schools, including Taft, Westminster, Hopkins, Salisbury, and Avon. Matches are typically played on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the level of competition consistently attracts tournament-level players.

The season runs a 16-match schedule beginning in March, with matches made up of six singles and three doubles. The team plays at home on eight courts — four lighted Har-Tru and four all-weather — and practices daily for an 90 minutes, developing individual skills and match play so every player is ready to compete in singles and doubles alike.

Above all, the program is built on a strong work ethic, team play, sportsmanship, academic excellence, and leadership — a commitment to excellence on and off the court. A JV program is also offered.

Meet the Coaches

Alan Leathers

Head Coach

Alan Leathers joined the Mathematics Department faculty in 2021. He teaches math, is Head Coach for Boys Varsity Tennis and Boys JV Soccer, is an advisor and a dorm parent in Teddy House. Alan grew up in Avon, Connecticut, and graduated from Avon Old Farms School. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from Boston University. Out of college, he worked for Warren Bosworth, customizing tennis rackets for professional tennis players, including 16 of the top 30 players in the world. Since then, he has taught math and and coached soccer, squash, basketball, and tennis at Avon Old Farms, Westminster, and Dexter Southfield School. Alan also served as Director of Tennis at the Chatham Beach and Tennis Club for 13 years. Most recently, he lived in Bloomfield and worked as a financial services representative at New England Financial Group. In his spare time, he enjoys biking, hiking, and playing sports of all kinds. He and his wife, Sarah, live on campus with their dog, Maggie.
Cole Paradies

Assistant Coach

Cole joined the Science Department faculty in January 2023. He teaches AP Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, is a house parent and assistant coach for Boys JV Basketball. Raised in Owego, New York, west of Binghamton, Cole graduated from Owego Free Academy and holds a bachelor's degree in natural resources management from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. SUNY-ESF is the oldest and most distinguished institution in the nation that focuses on the study of the environment. Prior to joining Gunn, Cole previously lived in Aurora, New York, Florida, and Massachusetts, and worked as an outdoor educator in the Berkshires. In his free time, Cole likes to play sports and spend time with friends.
