Golf has long been part of Gunn's athletic tradition. The season kicks off in late March, testing the skill — and patience — of student-athletes against New England's unpredictable early spring weather and course conditions. The team is coed and plays a full slate of 13 dual and tri-meets, mostly nine-hole matches with at least three 18-hole rounds mixed in. Late in the season, team members compete in the four-team Bader Cup hosted by Loomis Chaffee, before wrapping up at the Kingswood Invitational — the Western New England Championship.
Home matches are played at Washington Golf Club, a nine-hole course built around 1905 whose tight landing areas and small greens demand precise shot-making. Before the course opens each year, golfers can take advantage of early practice and qualifying rounds at Fairview Farm and Stonybrook Golf. Throughout the season, students also tee it up at some of the region's finest courses — The Course at Yale, Bulls Bridge (Tom Fazio), and Wintonbury Hills (Pete Dye) among them. Practice blends real course play with intra-squad scrambles, driving range time, and dedicated short game work — chipping, pitching, and everything in between.
