Golf has long been a part of Gunn’s athletic offerings. Players get an early chance to test their skill and patience dealing with all types of weather and course conditions in late March and early April. The usual season consists of thirteen dual and tri-meets. Most matches are nine-hole events, but at least three eighteen-hole matches are scheduled. Towards the end of the season we compete in the four-team Bader Cup hosted by Loomis-Chafee. The season finishes with the Kingswood Invitational Tournament which serves as the western New England Championship.
The home course is the Washington Golf Club. This nine hole course was established around 1905 and its tight landing areas and small greens demand solid shot making. Prior to the opening of the Washington Golf Course each year, the team plays qualifying and practice rounds at Fairview Farm Golf Course and Stonybrook Golf Course. During the season the golfers get opportunities to play at The Course at Yale, Bulls Bridge Golf Course (Tom Fazio), Wintonbury Hills (Pete Dye) and some other fine courses in the area. Practices include regular course play, intra-squad scrambles and challenges, driving range time, and other opportunities to work on chipping, pitching, and other aspects of the short game.
The team has been quite successful in recent years and has seen alumni of the program continue playing at the college level. Alums have gone on to play golf at Muhlenberg, Roanoke College, University of Connecticut, and the University of Hartford.
