Coed Varsity Golf
Team Overview
Golf has long been a part of FGS’s athletic offerings. Players get an early chance to test their skill and patience dealing with all types of weather and course conditions in late March and early April. The usual season consists of thirteen dual and tri-meets. Most matches are nine-hole events, but at least three eighteen-hole matches are scheduled. Towards the end of the season we compete in the four-team Bader Cup hosted by Loomis-Chafee. The season finishes with the Kingswood Invitational Tournament which serves as the western New England Championship. The FGS was the 2009 winner of the KIT and has also finished in the top 5 twice during the last 5 years. Female golfers are able to participate in the Pippy O’Connor Independent Schools Golf Classic which is the New England Championship for female golfers. In 2012 FGS golfers finished 2nd and 5th in the Pippy O’Connor.
The home course is the Washington Golf Club. This nine hole course was established around 1905 and its tight landing areas and small greens demand solid shot making. Prior to the opening of the Washington Golf Course each year, the team plays qualifying and practice rounds at Fairview Farm Golf Course and Stonybrook Golf Course. During the season the golfers get opportunities to play at The Course at Yale, Bulls Bridge Golf Course (Tom Fazio), Wintonbury Hills (Pete Dye) and some other fine courses in the area. Practices include regular course play, intra-squad scrambles and challenges, driving range time, and other opportunities to work on chipping, pitching, and other aspects of the short game.
The team has been quite successful in recent years and has seen alumni of the program continue playing at the college level. Three recent alums have played golf Muhlenberg, Roanoke College and the University of Hartford. The 2012 golf captain Cameron MacKay is playing at the University of Connecticut. 2013 graduates Paloma Vega and Anton Frodelius are playing at Barry University and Wagner College respectively. The past few years have been very successful for the golf program. Our record for the past four years is 51-13 and we are always looking forward to having new golfers join our ranks.
