Next week marks the return of a great Gunn tradition — Canterbury Day! Each year, athletic teams from The Frederick Gunn School and Canterbury School come together in the spirit of competition, sportsmanship, and camaraderie during the final week of the fall athletic season. School spirit is at an all-time high as the Highlanders take on the Saints and seek to accumulate points toward the Gunn-Canterbury Cup.
Game-day locations rotate between the two schools on an annual basis. This year, Canterbury will host six teams of Highlanders on the Saints' campus in New Milford on Saturday, November 11. Directions to Canterbury School are available here (or enter 101 Aspetuck Avenue, New Milford, CT in your GPS). The game schedule is as follows. Please check the website for updates.

For the lead up to Canterbury Day, the Prefects have organized a weeklong celebration that includes an evening pep rally and bonfire on Monday, November 6. Spirit Week also kicks off Monday with students encouraged to dress according to a different theme each day, such as "BBQ Dads and Soccer Moms," and "Barbie vs. Oppenheimer."
The fall season athletic contests are the first in the yearlong competition to claim the Gunn-Canterbury Cup. Throughout the academic year, one point is awarded to the winner of each head-to-head interscholastic athletic contest between the two schools, regardless of level. Ties are worth half a point. At the end of the Spring Term, the school with the most points will win the cup. Canterbury is currently in possession of the cup, and Athletic Director Mike Marich P’23 ’24 has encouraged the Highlanders to do everything they can to win it back and bring it home to Washington once again.
The Varsity Cross Country teams from Gunn and Canterbury are also competing November 11 in the NEPSTA DIII Cross Country Championships, hosted by The Wheeler School at Highland Park in Attleboro, Massachusetts. (Details are available here or enter 104 Mechanic St., Attleboro, MA in your GPS.) The New England Championship meet traditionally draws about 400 runners from 30 independent high schools across the region. The first race of the day, Girls Varsity, is scheduled at 1:30 p.m., followed by Boys Varsity at 2:15 p.m. Go Gunn!!!
