Student’s Self-Portrait Earns Scholastic Art Award

Self-portrait by Jenny Shen '23

The 2022 Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards Exhibit opened Tuesday at the Donald and Linda Silpe Gallery at the University of Hartford, featuring an award-winning painting by Jenny Shen ’23. The juried student art exhibit, which runs through February 4, is part of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens.

Shen was honored with a Silver Key Award in the painting category for her self-portrait titled, “Me, Myself, and I.” She is a student of Visual Arts Department Chair Andrew Richards P'20 '23 in A.P. Studio Art. Students in A.P. Studio Art work rigorously throughout the school year towards creating a college-level portfolio. The course emphasizes art making as an ongoing, creative process, which includes the development of the student as an independent thinker, a goal setter, and problem solver, who reflects critically on their own work as well as the work of their peers and other artists to inform their creative process. The course also intends to help students on the journey to find their own artistic voice through thoughtful consideration of their aesthetic preferences and mastery of technical skills.

In addition to having their work featured in the exhibit, finalists in the 2022 Scholastic Art Awards will be recognized at a virtual celebration via Zoom on February 12. The exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. Visitors must follow all COVID-19 protocols and make an appointment by emailing artschool@hartford.edu. Making an appointment will ensure compliance with the university's COVID-19 visitor capacity policy.

The Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards is a professionally juried event recognizing only the best Connecticut student art work. Students in grades 7-12 from public, parochial, and private schools statewide are encouraged to participate. Works are selected for the exhibit by professional artists and university art faculty. Students may be awarded Gold or Silver keys and Honorable Mention Awards in each of 18 media categories.
