One way you can invest in the future of Gunn is by making a legacy gift, such as a bequest or other estate gift, through your will. The Frederick Gunn School honors those who choose to make a legacy gift by enrolling them in the H. Willets and Samuel Jackson Underhill Bequest Society. This legacy society is named in honor of two brothers and Gunn alumni, Samuel Jackson Underhill ’35 and Former Trustee H. Willets Underhill ’31.

Honoring the Past, Present, and Future of Gunn
After graduating from The Gunnery, Samuel J. Underhill ’35 earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale and entered Harvard Law School. He joined the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II and was commissioned aboard the USS Yorktown. On May 8, 1942, he was reported killed in action during the Battle of Coral Sea. He was posthumously awarded both the Navy Cross and a Purple Heart. In 1943, the U.S. Navy named a destroyer escort, the USS Underhill, in his honor. Former Trustee H. Willets Underhill ’31 and his wife, Margaret, chose to further honor Samuel when they bequeathed to the school legacy gifts totaling over $2 million.
